Speckled Butterhead Lettuce
Speckled Butterhead is a Dutch heirloom brought to Ontario, Canada in 1799 by a Mennonite immigrant named Urias Martin. Plants produce compact, bibb-type heads with speckled red and green leaves. Traditionally used as a looseleaf cutting variety, but the heads are quite lovely as well. Speckled Butterhead was our favorite trial lettuce of 2022. Plants reach full maturity approximately 45 to 50 days after planting but can be harvested for baby greens in as little as three weeks. Each packet contains a minimum of 150 seeds.
