Calhoun Crowder is an heirloom variety of cowpea dating back to 1949. Developed by Dr. P. L. Hawthorne of the Calhoun Research Station in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, Calhoun Crowder produces excellent yields of long, mostly green pods tightly packed with round, speckled peas. The plants have a bushy habit with the pods held high and upright for easy picking. They are reported to have excellent resistance to wilt and nematodes and indeed were very healthy and high-yielding in our trials.
