Long Handle Dipper Gourd Seeds

Long Handle Dipper Gourd

25 Seeds

$ 3.69

(Lagenaria siceraria) Also known as siphon gourd, this long-necked gourd was traditionally used by Pioneers to create long handled dippers for use at the well or for drinking in the house.  This process of growing, curing, and cutting siphon gourds into beautiful and useful dippers is one of the many important Appalachian homesteading skills detailed in the famous Foxfire book series.  Vigorous, vining plants produce abundant yields of gourds with bulbs measuring 4-6" across and necks 12-14" long.  Provide a trellis or other support to encourage the development of straight necks.  110 days to harvest.  25 seeds per packet.

CULTURE: After danger of frost has passed, sow seeds in hills with 4-5 seeds per hill and hills spaced 6ft in all directions.  Germination will occur in 7-14 days.  Once seeds have germinated, thin to 3 seedlings per hill.  In short season climates, plants can be started indoors and transplanted after danger of frost has passed.  Trellising plants will help keep gourds clean and disease-free.
