Maximilian Sunflower
Maximilian sunflower is a native perennial wildflower that is commonly found in prairies and roadsides all across the United States. Named after German naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, who led an expedition of the American West in 1832, the Maximilian sunflower grows 4 to 9 feet tall, producing showy clusters of 2 to 3-inch, yellow flowers all along the main stem. Maximilian sunflower is a popular range plant for use in pasture mixes as the plants are favored by cattle and provide an important food source during droughts and dry spells. Likewise, the late-blooming, cheerful yellow flowers are an important source of nectar for bees and other pollinators during the summer dearth. Like other sunflowers, this species can spread through seed, however it is mainly propagated through rhizomes, leading to the formation of colonies. Pull plants in the fall if spreading is not desired. Blooms late summer through fall. Makes an excellent cut flower. Each packet contains a minimum of 250 seeds.
