Perestroika Siberian Tomato

$ 3.79

Perestroika is a Siberian variety collected by Bill McDorman of Seeds Trust shortly before the dissolution of the Soviet Union.  During his trip, McDorman visited some of the summer dachas that dotted the Siberian countryside and discovered a treasure trove of heirlooms being maintained by the residents of these cottage settlements.  Perestroika is one of those varieties.  Vigorous plants are early and heavy producers of perfectly round tomatoes averaging 2 to 3 inches across.   Fruit are red at maturity with perfectly ripened shoulders and an excellent, classic tomato flavor.  With harvests beginning around 67 days after transplanting, Perestroika is a great option for northern and high-altitude gardens that experience short growing seasons.  Indeterminate.  Each packet contains a minimum of 50 seeds.

History:  The Perestroika tomato owes its name to the reformation movement implemented by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev which sought to introduce more market-like influences in the Soviet economy.  Together with the Glasnost policy, which attempted to introduce a degree of openness to the political process, Perestroika is often argued to be one of the main contributors to the eventual fall of the Soviet Union.
