Solanum lycopersicum
Chocolate Pear is an heirloom variety of cherry tomato that produces small, pear-shaped fruit with attractive, chocolate-colored skins. While we consider many of the pear-shaped tomatoes somewhat underwhelming in terms of their flavor, Chocolate Pear stands as an exception. Its flavor is bright, bold and a bit tangy. While it is not very sweet, the Chocolate Pear tomato's rich flavor is a nice complement to the sweetness offered by most other cherry tomatoes. As such, we find that it works beautifully in heirloom tomato salad, where it can lend both diversity of shape and flavor to the mix. We also aren't shy of eating it alone as some cravings call for something tangy and a bit acidic.

A note to those watching their salt intake, black/brown tomatoes often possess a punch of acidity that is interpreted by the tongue as salty. It's a good way to satisfy those cravings in a healthy and convenient way.
Besides being flavorful and unique in form, the Chocolate Pear tomato has the added benefit of being extremely prolific, bearing hundreds of fruit in a single season. We struggle to keep up with them. No doubt, growers will have plenty of cherry tomatoes for snacking, salads and every other use. The indeterminate plants are vigorous, often outgrowing their cages and invading the space of nearby plants. They seem to especially thrive in hot, dry conditions. 70 days from transplant. 50 seeds per packet.
