While Larkspur is relatively easy to grow, one must be patient while they are germinating.  Planting in the fall or if spring sowing, cold stratifying the seeds for two weeks before planting will improve your results.  The typical time required for germination is 15-30 days but take heart; the reward is worth the wait.  Once sprouted, the flowers grow relatively carefree, producing dense, profuse blooms in around 100 days.  For a steady harvest, plant in succession beginning as soon as the soil can be worked and continuing every 3-4 weeks until the last spring frost.  Annual.  Each packet contains a minimum of 250 seeds.

How to Grow Larkspur

Larkspur thrives in full sun and well-enriched, slightly alkaline soil. It struggles in soggy, poorly drained conditions. Cooler temperatures are ideal, and it grows best in areas with mild summers. In regions with hot, dry summers, larkspur may produce fewer blooms.

Larkspur seeds germinate best when pre-chilled. To cold-stratify, place the seeds in a sealed container or ziplock bag and refrigerate for 7 days at 35–40°F. Because larkspur has a taproot, it doesn’t transplant well—direct sowing is strongly recommended. Plan your planting to allow for a 6-week vernalization period. In northern regions, sow outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. In milder zones (5b and warmer), fall sowing may result in spring blooms. However, avoid fall planting in areas with heavy winter rainfall, as excess moisture can lead to seed rot.

Sow seeds 1/4" deep and gently cover them—they require darkness to germinate. Space seeds 4–6" apart. Soil should be cool for optimal germination; seeds will not germinate if the soil temperature exceeds 55°F. Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination period, which typically takes 14 to 21 days.

Not recommended

Larkspur is vulnerable to fungal diseases, especially in damp conditions. Common issues include root and crown rot (caused by Pythium or Sclerotinia delphinii), powdery mildew, and stem canker. To minimize the chance of infection, plant in well-drained soil, follow proper spacing guidelines, and keep the area weed-free. To help keep leaves dry, opt for drip irrigation rather than overhead watering.

Larkspur may also develop black leaf spot, a bacterial disease caused by Pseudomonas delphinii. Prevent it using the same strategies as for fungal problems: maintain good airflow, avoid watering from above, and use well-drained soil. Promptly remove any affected plants to prevent spread.

Harvest flowers when the bottom quarter to third of the stem has flowers open. Typical vase life is 5-7 days.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Most larkspur varieties possess perfect flowers that contain both male and female organs. While self-pollination is possible, their open floral structure allows access to insects which can facilitate cross pollination. For this reason, it is not recommended that multiple varieties be grown when pure seed is desired.

HARVESTING SEED:

After flowering, larkspur plants produce seed pods that swell and mature as the petals fall. As the pods fully develop, they begin to dry and turn brown. At maturity, dry pods will produce a rattling sound when shaken, indicating that the seeds inside are ready for harvest.

Timely collection is crucial, as overly mature pods may split open and disperse seeds naturally. When the rattling stage is reached, the pods should be cut and brought indoors to continue drying. A drying period of approximately two weeks is recommended before transferring the seeds to an airtight container for winter storage.

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Larkspur seeds will maintain 50% viability for up to 3 years when stored under ideal conditions.
