More about Dwarf Fairy Mix

Iberis umbellata

Candytuft Dwarf Fairy Mix is a low-growing perennial shrub that produces fragrant umbels in shades of pink, purple and white.  Growing to just 10 inches tall, Candytuft makes an excellent border plant for the front of flower beds where its dense, spreading foliage helps to shade out weeds while providing a green backdrop for its beautiful flowers.  Mature plants have a dramatic effect when they spill over edging or stone walls.  Candytuft is also well suited as a cut flower with fragrant colorful blooms that last about a week in a vase.  The seed heads are also quite attractive and are sometimes dried and used in everlasting arrangements.  Blooms spring to summer.  Perennial in zones 3-9.  Each packet ... How to Grow Candytuft

Candytuft thrives in full sun to light shade, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering. It prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. This low-maintenance perennial can tolerate various soil types, including sandy or rocky soils, as long as they offer good drainage. Amending the soil with organic matter can improve its fertility and moisture retention. Once established, candytuft requires minimal watering. These sun and soil conditions make it an excellent choice for garden borders, rock gardens, or as ground cover, where it produces its clusters of charming white, pink, or lavender flowers in the spring.

Direct sowing is the easiest method for starting Candytuft. Sow seeds outdoors in the spring or fall for cooler climates or fall for warmer climates. Sow seeds 1/16" deep in a prepared garden bed. Keep well-watered until germination has occurred (20-30 days).

Candytuft can be started indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost and transplanted outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Space plants 9-12" in all directions.

Candytuft is relatively easy to grow. When starting indoors it is important to transplant before flower formation to yield the best results.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Saving seeds from Candytuft is relatively easy. No isolation is necessary unless individual flower colors are desired.

HARVESTING SEED:

Allow the flowers to fully mature and form seed heads. On the seed head you will find flat, papery husks containing a single seed each. Cut the entire seed head from the plant and rub these husks between your hands to release the small, flat seeds. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Candytuft seeds will remain viable for several years if stored under ideal conditions.
