Short-Season Tomatoes

Planted just over a week ago. It germinated faster than I expected and was already coming up a few days ago. It's doing great and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I purchased the Red-N-Sweet watermellon seeds from Thresh Seed Co. after seeing a PBS show about this variety of watermelon. The seeds were delivered promptly and I had a 100% germination of the seeds. The plants are healthy and thriving. I am looking forward to my first watermelon. I will definitely use Thresh Seeds in the future.

When my grandfather returned from the First World War, soon after the "land grab rush" began in Florida. He left his hometown, Madison GA (70 miles east of Atlanta), and went to Florida with his wife, only to be wiped out by the plant viruses, etc. that were destroying the tomatoes. Don't know if Marglobe appeared
to save the farmers while he was in Florida or after he had moved back to Madison, but he did grow it on his farm in Madison and it was a favorite with him, along with Rutgers, a child of Marglobe. Based on his recommendation, I grew what appears to be the "original" Rutgers here in Atlanta in the early 1970's because when I looked for Marglobe it wasn't available locally at the time I looked. That summer, the Rutgers that I grew was productive, healthy and delicious. Becky Weeks has told me that she believes that the Rutgers she has at Thresh may be the strain that I grew in the 1970's. In my search for that original taste of Rutgers over the years I have tried all of the newer strains of that tomato, only to be disappointed each time. Now, thanks to Thresh I may be able to renew my love affair with Rutgers, and not only that, but also Marglobe, the tomato that was the immediate ancestor of Rutgers, as both are available at Thresh Seed.

First year trying these. The plant has been strong, healthy and productive. The fruit are delicious. Will grow again. NE Texas.

Germ was awesome. Large and bushy but no blooms yet. Hopefully soon.

Easy grow and delish, i need to do more research on tending to it. It did not produce as long as I thought. My first year gardening, I have lots to learn.

I was reading about the history and development of the red and sweet watermelon, totally interesting. Well even though it's to late here in East tx to plant them I bought some seeds for next spring. What I am trying right now from Thresh seeds is the Texas tiny tomato that was also interesting. I have 4 plants up about 3 inches tall right now so let's see what happens.

My first seeds sprouted quickly and were doing well but before they could be transplanted, chipmunks or squirrels got in them and trashed the bunch while they were looking for acorns. I have started new seeds and will be transplanting them in a week or so, so this is a review based on my growing of this cucumber for several years starting about 2005. Up through peak maturity these cucumbers were mild, juicy and delicious for eating, including the skin, which is tender. I always got good production relative to their 3 to 4 foot long vines and after trying several other cucumbers, this became the only one that I grew. I have limited sunlight in my yard, so a smaller cucumber plant that I can grow in a larger pot hit the spot for me. I had misplaced the name of the company where I originally found the seeds and regularly looked for them online without success every spring until this year when I found them at Thresh. I always found this variety to be very edible even after they began to turn yellow (after 3 to 4 inches), though as they got larger (up to 5 and 6 inches) the taste, tender skin and moisture weren't quite as exceptional. Keep them watered, provide a bit of fertilizer, pick them, rub off the small black spines, rinse and enjoy. They are also perfect for growing in a pot on a balcony or deck in the sun, but remember to water regularly and since they are prolific for their size, fertilize moderately with a fertilizer that is a bit lower in nitrogen relative to the percentages for phosphorus and potassium.

I purchased the half runner beans for the garden and planted them. Within 5 days they sprouted and are doing really well. I look forward to seeing how they produce. This story is to be continued when I harvest them.
