How to Grow Parsnips

Parsnips grow best in loose, deep, well-drained soil free of stones to allow straight root development. Full sun is ideal, though they tolerate light shade. Keep soil consistently moist during germination for best results.

Sow parsnip seeds directly in the garden as soon as soil can be worked in early spring. Plant shallowly in rows, keeping soil evenly moist. Germination is slow, so patience is key—interplanting with radishes can help mark rows and improve germination.

Parsnips are relatively trouble-free, but may occasionally attract carrot rust fly, aphids, or leafminers. Floating row covers can help protect young plants. Healthy, well-spaced crops are less prone to pest issues.

Diseases & Other Problems

Parsnips are generally hardy but can be affected by root rot in poorly drained soil and leaf blights in humid conditions. Good drainage, crop rotation, and proper spacing help prevent most disease issues.
