Wild Bergamot (Bee Balm)

Wild Bergamot prefers full to part sun and well-drained, loamy soil. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil pH levels, but prefers slightly acidic soil. It is also drought tolerant once established.

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before average last frost.  Surface sow seeds and cover very lightly with fine potting mix. Transplant into individual containers once seedlings have a couple true leaves.  Can also be direct-seeded in the spring and thinned to one plant every 12-18 inches.  Flowers in the second year.

Harden off seedlings for a few days prior to transplanting. After danger of frost has passed, dig a hole roughly the size of the root ball and lower the seedling in, being careful not to disturb the roots. Backfill with loose soil and water well. Space plants 12-18" in all directions. Keep well-watered until the plants are established.

The most common disease to affect Wild Bergamot is powdery mildew. Space plants adequately to promote airflow and avoid overhead watering or watering at night, which may promote disease.

Wild Bergamot makes exceptional cut flowers. They have a long vase life, and their bright purple-pink flowers and fragrant foliage make them a great addition to any bouquet.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Harvest Wild Bergamot seeds when the flowers have dried and the seed heads have turned brown. Cut the seed heads off the plant and place them in a paper bag to dry. Once dry, shake the bag to release the seeds. Wild Bergamot also propagates easily through stem cuttings.
