More about Partridge Pea

Chamaecrista fasciculata

Often grown as an ornamental, Partridge pea is a beautiful native plant that produces a showy display of yellow pendulate flowers.  Besides its beauty, the partridge pea offers a number of benefits.  It fixes nitrogen, thus enriching the soil while providing erosion control.  It serves as an important nectar source for bees and a host plant for sulfur butterflies.  And finally, its seeds are an important food source for quail (particularly the northern bobwhite), greater and lesser prairie chicken, mallard, ring-necked pheasant, and other grassland birds.  Blooms late summer.  Each packet contains a minimum of 50 seeds.

How to Grow Partridge Peas

Partridge Pea requires well-drained, sandy soil and full sun for optimal growth. It is drought tolerant and can tolerate some shade, but will produce more flowers and seed pods in full sun.

For best results, scarify seeds by rubbing between two pieces of medium grit sandpaper and then cold stratify by placing seeds in the refrigerator for 30 days. Sow outdoors once soil temps reach 55 degrees. Seed can be broadcasted on a prepared bed and then raked in until approximately 1/4" of soil covers seeds.

Not recommended

Partridge pea is a native species that is easy to care for once established and not often bothered by insects.

Partridge Pea is not suitable for use as a cut flower.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Harvest Partridge Pea seeds when the pods begin to dry and brown. Cut the stems and place the pods in a paper bag to finish drying. Shake the bag to loosen the seeds, then spread them out to dry. Once dry, store the seeds in a cool, dry place.

HARVESTING SEED:

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Partridge Pea seeds can remain viable for up to five years if stored in a cool, dry place.
