Turkey Craw Pole Bean

25 Seeds

$ 3.99

(Phaseolus vulgaris) Appalachian heirloom pole bean originating from the Cumberland Gap region near the junctions of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee.  The name Turkey Craw is the result of charming folklore claiming that the original bean was discovered in a turkey's craw.  Pole-type plants produce excellent yields of stringless, 6" long pods.  Commonly used as a dual-purpose variety, with snap beans harvested after the pods have begun to fill out, but before the seeds have lost their immature green color.  Beans harvested at this stage have similar qualities to a greasy bean, but without the need for destringing.  Mature beans have beautiful chestnut mottling and can be used similarly to any other dry bean.  80 days to harvest.  25 seeds per packet.

CULTURE: After danger of frost has passed, sow seeds 4-6" apart, 1" deep in rows 24-36" apart.  Plants require trellising.  Under ideal conditions, germination will occur in 7-10 days.  For highest yield, harvest regularly.  Avoid touching plants while leaves are wet as this can spread disease.
