(Phaseolus vulgaris) An early half-runner bean originating from Kentucky. Produces excellent yields of 4 to 5-inch-long slender pods. Tender, flavorful beans are suitable for use as a string bean. Mature pods contain small tan seeds with black stripes. Listed as an endangered heirloom in the "Place-Based Foods of Appalachia." String-type. 50-60 days to harvest. 25 seeds per packet.
CULTURE: After danger of frost has passed, sow seeds 4-6" apart, 1" deep in rows 24-36" apart. Plants require trellising. Under ideal conditions, germination will occur in 7-10 days. For highest yield, harvest regularly. Avoid touching plants while leaves are wet as this can spread disease.
