from 312 reviewsI've been growing heirloom tomatoes for close to 30 years, and from my own seed for more than 20. Eva Purple Ball is one of my go-to varieties that I grow almost every year. They're consistently productive and disease/crack resistant, and versatile in use.
I grew this variety 5 years ago. The harvest was huge. They have a wonderful, creamy texture when cooked. I always include them in the pot of calico beans with several other varieties with different tastes and textures. I am still using the stored harvest with no noticable change in taste or texture. Give these a little garden space and enjoy the harvest for several years.
One of my favorites! The first tender, young pods of the season get eaten raw in the garden while I am weeding. As the harvest becomes more than can be eaten fresh, sauteed and steamed, the canning, freezing and pickling begins. When I have as many put away as I need the rest of the pods are left on the vines to dry. I pick the dry pods and put them in a basket to be shelled in late fall. The beautiful dry seeds are stored in a jar to be enjoyed in soups, stews and as baked beans.
Novice gardener in year four or five, Zone B6, central Connecticut. I planted these seeds pretty late, around May 15th. All the seedlings were eaten by our herd of wild rabbits. Planted again around end of May with protection. They skyrocketed! most were about seven feet tall, but one grew at least ten feet tall and had a huge head. These sunflowers are simply magnificent. Cars slowed just so the occupants could gawk! I'm planting twice as many this year. I cannot recommend this variety enough.
I planted a few seeds in mid summer. Our area experienced a drought so I wasn’t expecting much. They grew faster than expected and when I pulled them they were huge, the palm of my hand huge. When I cut them the skins were very tender the flesh crisp and sweet with a hint of spice not a bit of woodiness for their size.
