Solanum lycopersicum
Dixie Golden Giant is a rare yellow heirloom tomato with an uncertain history. The variety was first introduced to the public in 1994 but is believed to have Amish roots that may trace back to the 1930s. Unlike many yellow tomatoes, which appear pale because they contain very low levels of carotenoids, Dixie Golden Giant develops its cheerful color through the accumulation of pro-lycopene, a carotenoid pigment related to the red lycopene found in most tomatoes and believed to have potentially greater nutritional value.
The flavor is notably sweet with very little perceived acidity, making it an excellent slicing tomato. Analytical measurements also place this variety below average in total acidity compared with many tomatoes. The dense flesh and mild flavor also make it well suited for sauces, producing a bright yellow-orange marinara that pairs well with pasta, chicken, and vegetables. Approximately 85 days from transplant. Each packet contains a minimum of 50 seeds.
