How to Grow Mint

Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. Mint tolerates a range of conditions but performs best with steady moisture. Because it spreads aggressively, consider planting in containers or a confined bed. Good airflow helps prevent disease and keeps foliage clean and vigorous.

Sow mint seeds on the soil surface and press lightly—do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep soil evenly moist and warm. Seedlings can be slow and variable, so thin gently once established and transplant carefully.

Transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 12-18" apart in all directions.

Insect Pests

Not typically an issue.

Diseases & Other Problems

Mint is generally disease-resistant, but good airflow and well-drained soil are key to prevention. Avoid overcrowding and overhead watering, which can encourage fungal issues like rust or powdery mildew. Harvest regularly to keep plants vigorous, and remove any affected leaves promptly to limit spread.

Mint should be harvested early in the morning for the highest oil content and volatiles. Leaves may be dried or frozen for later use.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Mint is most easily propagated by cuttings or root divisions, however saving seeds can be an effective method of propagation. No isolation is generally necessary as few distinct varieties exist within species.

HARVESTING SEED:

Allow flower spikes to mature and dry on the plant, then collect the tiny seeds before they scatter.

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Mint seeds typically remain viable for about 2–3 years when stored properly. Keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place—ideally in an airtight container.
