Solanum lycopersicum
Tasmanian Chocolate is a dwarf tomato variety that produces large, 8 to 12-ounce, chocolate brown tomatoes on short, bushy plants. Over the years, we've tried many dwarf tomatoes and have found them all to be underwhelming in terms of flavor or texture (some were downright hard). That is until now. Tasmanian Chocolate is the first bush-type tomato we've found that produces well (great, actually) and tastes good. We enjoyed them all summer long, and although we had many tomatoes available out in the trial plot, we often found ourselves going to these, which grew contently and conveniently in half whiskey barrels on our patio. Even though the plants were small, it seemed we almost always had one ready to pick, and they were always delicious. All-in-all, we can confidently give our full endorsement of this variety for those with small gardens, container gardens, or even those with big gardens who want to keep some tomatoes close to the house. Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall and mature approximately 70 days from transplant. Bred by members of the Dwarf Tomato Project. Each packet contains a minimum of 50 seeds.
