How to Grow Baby's Breath

Baby's breath thrives in full sun to light shade. It requires at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and abundant blooms. The soil should be well-draining and slightly alkaline with good fertility. Loamy or sandy soils are typically suitable, but proper drainage is crucial to prevent root rot. Baby's breath is tolerant of drought once established but benefits from regular watering during dry spells. These sun and soil conditions make it a versatile and lovely addition to gardens, borders, and floral arrangements, where its delicate white flowers create an airy and romantic atmosphere.

Direct sowing preferred. After danger of frost has passed, sow seeds 1/8" deep in a prepared garden bed. Maintain consistent moisture without overwatering until the seedling have emerged. When seedlings have a few true leaves, thin them to 8 inches apart.

Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Harden off and transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 8 inches in all directions.

Baby's breath prefers relatively poor soil. Do not fertilize as this can cause foliage growth at the expense of blooms.

Baby's Breath are famous for their use as a cut flower. They have a long vase life, lasting up to two weeks if well cared for. Flowers can also be dried and used in everlasting arrangements.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Saving seeds from Baby's Breath is relatively easy. No special isolation is required unless different varieties of the same species are being grown.

HARVESTING SEED:

Allow the flowers to dry. Cut entire mature sprays from the plant, keeping upright to ensure that the seeds are not lost. Place the heads upside down in a paper bag and allow to continue to dry with the top of the bag open to allow moisture to escape. After a week or two, shake the seeds into the bag and collect into an airtight container for storage.

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Baby's Breath seeds will remain viable for several years if stored under ideal conditions.
