Tar Heel Pole Snap/Green Bean

$ 3.99

(Phasolus vulgaris) An old pole bean, reportedly carried by former residents of North Carolina who had migrated to Washington state in search of work in the timber industry around the turn of the 20th century.  Once traded among the Washington locals, the beans became known as Tar Heel beans in honor of their provenance. Vigorous, pole-type plants produce heavy yields of 5-6" long, flattened pods which bulge under the pressure of the developing seed.  Reminiscent of a greasy bean, but without the shiny hull.  The flavor is similar as well, with a heartiness that can't be found in modern beans.  String-type. 75 days to harvest.  25 seeds per packet.

CULTURE: After danger of frost has passed, sow seeds 4-6" apart, 1" deep in rows 24-36" apart.  Plants require trellising.  Under ideal conditions, germination will occur in 7-10 days.  For highest yield, harvest regularly.  Avoid touching plants while leaves are wet as this can spread disease.
