Cucumis melo
Collective Farm Woman is a Ukrainian/Russian heirloom melon variety dating back to the early 1930s that produces white-fleshed melons with a unique, pear-like texture and luscious, sweet flavor. Originating from Russia and bred for the cooler, shorter seasons that challenged many gardeners of the Soviet Union, the Collective Farm Woman melon is uniquely suited for northern and high-altitude gardeners of the United States who likewise experience the challenges that come along with short growing seasons. What's more, these unique melons feature a thin, dark green rind which turns yellow at maturity, thereby taking the guesswork out of melon picking, and making them a great choice for beginners.

Reportedly developed by Russian breeder V. Balyasnyie, the Collective Farm Woman melon was selected for its early maturity and uniform ripening under the cooler conditions experienced by many of the country's northern gardeners. Upon its release under the name Kolkhoznitsa (Russian: Collective Farm Woman), the melon quickly became popular among dacha gardeners living outside of Moscow, later gaining widespread popularity throughout the Soviet Union. It remains so today, particularly throughout Ukraine. A strain of this variety was acquired from the Ukraine in 1993 and was subsequently released to the Seed Savers Exchange with the help of Moscow gardener Marina Danilenko.
In the garden, Collective Farm Woman is a delight to grow. Its thin, yet durable rinds resist cracking better than other varieties we've tried, and we especially appreciate the way they announce their readiness by turning a vibrant shade of yellow. Inside, the white flesh is sweet and refreshing with a juicy, pear-like texture. Its quality and texture are maintained clear out to the rind—our children will sit briefly quiet on the porch, scooping spoonfuls of the refreshing melon into their mouths until just a paper-thin bowl of rind remains. Payment for this brief respite from noise is remitted as soon as the sugar sets in... 80-85 days to harvest. Each packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.
