While Larkspur is relatively easy to grow, one must be patient while they are germinating.  Planting in the fall or if spring sowing, cold stratifying the seeds for two weeks before planting will improve your results.  The typical time required for germination is 15-30 days but take heart; the reward is worth the wait.  Once sprouted, the flowers grow relatively carefree, producing dense, profuse blooms in around 100 days.  For a steady harvest, plant in succession beginning as soon as the soil can be worked and continuing every 3-4 weeks until the last spring frost.  Annual.  Each packet contains a minimum of 250 seeds.

How to Grow Clarkia

Clarkia is an easy-to-grow flower that thrives in average to poor soil with full to partial sun exposure. Clarkia prefers cool weather and can be subject to floral abortion or the development of weak and spindly stems if plants are grown in especially hot climates. Here in Iowa, we have had good success planting these flowers in areas that receive shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Sow seeds indoors approximately 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 1/16" deep in premoistened seed starting mix. Keep moist until germination has occurred (5-10 days.) Transplant outdoors as soon as soil can be worked. Can also be direct seeded in late spring, and fall in warmer climates. Thin to a final stand of one plant every 6-12 inches.

Harden off seedlings and plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 6-12 inches in all directions. Keep watered until plants are established.

Clarkia make excellent cut flowers with a long vase life. Harvest the floral stems when the earliest flowers are beginning to open. Spent blooms will fall off the stem and new blooms will continue to open for several days.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Saving seeds from Clarkia is relatively easy. Isolation is required if multiple varieties are being grown in a single year.

HARVESTING SEED:

Allow seed pods to dry and become brown. Pick from the plant and hold over a container as you pinch and pull apart the pods to release the small brownish-black seeds. Allow to dry completely for one week, then store in an airtight container until ready to use.

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Clarkia seeds can remain viable for several years if stored under ideal conditions.
